The criticism made by actress Miriam Margolyes to fans of the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise did not go down well with her former co-stars either. Actress Jessie Cave was emphatic in refuting the veteran artist’s statements and coming out in defense of films inspired by writer JK Rowling’s books.
Miriam Margolyes played Professor Sprout, responsible for herbology classes at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Jessie Cave played the young witch Lavender Brown, Ronnie Weasley’s (Rupert Grint) girlfriend, in some of the films.
In early March, in an interview with TVNZ, Margolyes said: “I worry about the ‘Harry Potter’ fans because they should be over this by now. You know, it’s been 25 years, it’s for kids. But they got stuck in it.”
She later added: “I go to some events and people say, ‘I’m going to have a Harry Potter themed wedding’, and then I think, ‘damn, what will their first night of fun be like?’. I can’t even imagine. ‘Harry Potter’ is amazing, I’m so grateful. But it’s over. It’s what I think”.
Jessie Cave spoke about Margolyes’ statements at a ‘Harry Potter’ fan convention in Paris. Asked about her colleague’s speeches, she was emphatic: “I think they were terrible.”
“I really don’t like what she said. It’s a wonderful thing what ‘Harry Potter’ did. It created a community of fans that has matured and remains connected, this passed on to subsequent generations and it’s wonderful. She probably doesn’t understand any of this. Leave her alone.”
A few days ago, actress Helena Bonham Carter, who plays the witch Bellatrix Lestrange in the ‘Harry Potter’ films, also lamented Margolyes’ statements.
“I love this woman,” Carter told Bustle magazine when asked about her colleague’s statements. “She is someone with a big inner child. But I think as we get older, we need to keep that child alive.”
