The filmmaker will serve as producer on the sequel to Ready Player One, which hit theaters in 2018.

Steven Spielberg has already shown that he works very well with any film genre, but science fiction is one of his preferences. And one of his best films in this genre is Ready Player One, the adaptation of Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name.

The film, starring Tye Sheridan, hit theaters in 2018 and grossed more than $583 million worldwide, costing $175 million to make. As it was a commercial success, the possibility of a sequel quickly gained momentum. Now, six years later, Spielberg has confirmed that this will happen.

The filmmaker told Showbiz 411 that he will only act as a producer in this second part. He also highlighted that, at this time, there is nothing planned for 2024. “We are in a discovery phase, trying to figure out what comes next,” he said.

Ready Player One is set in a dystopian future where much of humanity is connected to a virtual reality called Oasis. Its creator, before dying, left behind a series of hidden digital Easter eggs that will give whoever finds them their fortune and power over their world.

A new treasure hunt

The idea of ​​making a sequel gained more traction in 2020, when Cline published the second novel, Ready Player Two. However, the reviews were not very good and this seemed to kill the project of continuing the story on the big screen.

In the second book, the protagonist discovers an advanced virtual reality helmet and, with it, sets out on a new search for a mysterious prize. As you can see, it’s quite similar to the original story, which is why the press criticized the sequel’s lack of originality.

In addition to Sheridan, Ready Player One also stars Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance and Simon Pegg. Critics called the film “a thrilling, sweetly nostalgic ride that perfectly encapsulates Spielberg’s strengths while adding another riveting adventure to his filmography.”

While it’s good news that a Ready Player One sequel is in Spielberg’s plans, it appears the project will take some time to come to fruition. All that’s left is to wait.
