The films coming to theaters in April 2024

April arrived with good news in cinemas across the country, including curious horror titles, sequels to acclaimed franchises, new Brazilian feature films and major international productions that had already been widely talked about since last year.

For those who doubt it, the highlights of the month include the long-awaited Rivals — a feature-length sports and drama film that has been touted for months as one of the great titles of 2024 —, starring none other than Zendaya (Dune: Part 2). Furthermore, the month also marks the debut of Ghostbusters: Ice Apocalypsesequence of Ghostbusters – Beyondand even independent trash horror Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2.

In addition to them, the list of new features also includes Civil wardirected by Alex Garland, The First Prophecyhorror starring Sônia Braga, and national titles such as The Passion According to GH. It is Evidence of Love — the latter starring none other than Sandy and Fábio Porchat, as a couple in love.

The First Prophecy

Sixth film in a franchise that has haunted audiences since the 1970s, The First Prophecy is a horror feature film that arrives in theaters on the 4th. Prequel to the story, which takes place even before the classic feature film The prophecythe title tells the story of an American who is sent to work in a church in Rome and discovers a conspiracy aimed at the birth of the Antichrist.

Directed by Arkasha Stevenson, in her feature film debut, the title has a terrifying trailer, as well as a marketing campaign that has sold it as the “scariest film of the year”. Starring Nell Tiger Free, it also has Brazilian Sônia Braga in its cast.

Ghostbusters: Ice Apocalypse

Another film from the acclaimed Ghostbusters franchise, Ghostbusters: Ice Apocalypse is a sequel to the film Ghostbusters – Beyond. Set three years later, it follows in the footsteps of the Spengler family as they return to New York and, faced with a new threat, team up with the original Ghostbusters to prevent the world from entering a second Ice Age.

Co-written and directed by Gil Kenan, the title is scheduled to hit Brazilian cinemas on April 11 and features actors such as Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Bill Murray and Mckenna Grace, who reprise their previous roles. The fifth film in the franchise, it premiered in the US in March and, since then, has grossed more than US$100 million at the global box office.

Civil war

Drama and action feature film, Civil war is a film by Alex Garland, starring Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura. Set in a dystopian future in which the US has entered civil war after the emergence of separatist movements in Texas and California, it revolves around a group of journalists who cross the country documenting the situation.

A new title from A24, it has been highly praised since it debuted at SXSW, especially for exploring a dystopian narrative in a different way and from a different point of view than usual. With release in the USA scheduled for April 12th, it arrives in Brazilian cinemas shortly after, on the 18th.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2

Confirmed even before its predecessor debuted in theaters, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 is a sequel to the trashy horror film of the same name released last year. Starring the famous Disney animal (who recently lost the rights to the character), it is a bloody — and quite heavy — retelling of the story of Pooh, Christopher Robin and Piglet.

In this new plot, set five months after the murders in the first film, Christopher Robin returns to his hometown and tries to rebuild his life, despite all the tragedies he has experienced. Pooh and Piglet, now famous serial killers, are forced to hide from society, at the same time as their desire for revenge against their former owner grows.

Rivals

One of the most anticipated titles of 2024, Rivals is a sports, romance and drama film that also hits the big screen on the 25th. Directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, the film follows in the footsteps of Tashi, a tennis player who retires and becomes her husband Art’s coach, transforming him into a world-famous champion.

One day, when presenting themselves for a tennis tournament, the couple rediscovers an old enemy from their youth: Patrick, a tennis player who in the past was Art’s best friend and Tashi’s official boyfriend. Together, the three realize that they still have many scores to settle and rekindle old rivalries, both on and off the court.
