The story of The Last of the Mohicans dates back to the novel of the same name by James Fenimore Cooper, published in 1826. It is part of the Leatherstocking Tales saga that follows a white man who grows up among a tribe of Native Americans and lives countless adventures with his brother.

In Mann’s adaptation we travel to the year 1757. North America is a battlefield of colonial interests; Britain and France fight for dominance and also utilize alliances with long-established local tribes. Nathaniel Poealso known as Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), wants to stay away from both fronts. However, when rescuing the daughters of the Colonel Munro (Maurice Roëves) with Chingachgook (Russell Means) and Uncas (Eric Schweig), he is drawn into the conflict.

Hawkeye falls in love with Cora Munro (Madeleine Stowe) – which makes him cross paths with the vengeful boss Huron Magua (Wes Studi), who lost his family at the hands of the English.
