Anthrax’s “forgotten” song that talks about the plight of the homeless

-

Anthrax is one of the most important names in the history of Thrash Metal and released great albums in the 1980s. This is the case with “State Of Euphoria”, the fourth album by the quintet led by guitarist Scott Ian and drummer Charlie Benante.

Released in 1988, “State Of Euphoria” is the successor to the classic “Among The Living” and features good tracks such as “Be All, End All”, “Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind”, “Now It’s Dark” and “Antisocial” (cover by French band Trust). Another interesting song from the album in question is “Who Cares Wins”, whose lyrics talk about a serious problem: the drama of people who don’t have a home.

Drummer Charlie Benante gave an interview to the Songfacts website in 2017 and spoke about the themes that inspired the composition of “Who Cares Wins”.

“At that time, we were starting to become aware of the homelessness situation and the problem of homelessness in the United States. I remember going to play in Portland and usually on my days off I would go to toy stores or of records, just to go out on my day off, explore [a cidade] and see what I could find. And a lot of times, I would see tons of homeless people. All over. Back then, people never talked about mental illness, drug addiction, or how veterans [das Forças Armadas dos EUA] They were basically thrown aside and now they were part of society and we weren’t taking care of them,” Charlie said.

“It’s hard for me to understand how, in this day and age, we still have such a huge problem with homelessness (…), but I don’t think we’ll ever solve it. It’s an ongoing problem, and I think this problem will probably always be here – until we both died”, added the Anthrax drummer.

“Who Cares Wins” is not among Anthrax’s most famous songs and apparently, it doesn’t work well live, as it was played in just one of the group’s shows, held on June 1, 1989, in Bremen (city located in Germany). .
