The construction of the new FC Porto Academy in Maia faces unexpected challenges after the discovery of important archaeological remains, including mosaics, which require a reassessment of the project.

The ambitious project to install a modern FC Porto academy in Maia stumbled upon a surprising archaeological discovery. The revelation took place this Monday, when, during preparatory excavations of the land, artefacts with profound historical significance emerged. Among these, Neolithic pictorial representations and mosaics that allude to figures and events from the distant past stand out.

In exclusive statements to NOTÍCIAS MAIA, historian Luís Aldeias-Novas, involved in the project, suggested moving the work to another location, as an alternative, emphasizing the importance of preserving the mosaics, highlighting the historical and cultural value of these unique finds.

As NOTÍCIAS MAIA knows, the discovery placed the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N) in a position of doubt regarding the viability of the works on the new FC Porto Academy in Maia, even after the approval of the execution unit of the project. project by the City Council. The CCDR-N raises questions about the impact of the project on the destruction of a valuable archaeological area, questioning its compatibility with heritage preservation objectives.

Given this situation, it may be necessary to reassess and open consultations with external entities with expertise in heritage, for an informed decision on the future licensing of the project by the Maia municipality. This new phase of scrutiny may involve reviewing the authorization previously given for the public auction of land required by the club, in light of recent findings.

Among the discoveries, mosaics and paintings that date back to ancient historical periods stand out, including representations of Benfica’s last European title, images of the well-known player Mantorras when he was young, and also engravings of Cavani wearing the Lisbon club’s shirt, elements that arouse great interest, both historical and cultural.

This unexpected challenge, revealed on such a peculiar date as April 1st, April Fools’ Day, adds a layer of complexity.
