A OpenAI announced that it has begun internally testing a new tool that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to clone voices by analyzing a sample of just 15 seconds.
The tool is called Voice Engine and, according to the technology, it has been in development since 2022 and you can get a small idea of its current status through the samples shared on the company’s official blog. OpenAI states that the Voice Engine will be useful not only for assisting in reading, but also in language translation and also to help people who suffer from degenerative conditions that affect speech.
Despite these benefits, OpenAI recognizes that the Voice Engine could be used by people with bad intentions and that the technology contains “serious risks”.
Therefore, the company notes that it has taken into account ‘feedback’ from professionals from various areas of civil society in order to minimize potential threats.
