The IL National Council meets this Sunday in Coimbra with the results of the legislative elections, the government scenarios and the European elections being debated, at a time when the possible presence of the party in an AD Government remains to be defined.

The meeting of the IL’s highest body between conventions was reported by the Lusa agency two days after the legislative elections, in which the party led by Rui Rocha maintained the same eight deputies, established itself as the fourth political force, had more votes, but failed to objective that had been proposed of electing 12 parliamentarians.

In addition to analyzing the electoral results of the legislative elections and debating the European elections in June, national councilors will be expected to discuss the various government scenarios.

This point was not part of the initial agenda, but was added in a new call at the request of ten national advisors, as announced by the Lusa agency this week.

On Friday, the president of IL, Rui Rocha, stated that the next few days “will be decisive” regarding the party’s possible participation in the Government, referring to the prime minister-designate, Luís Montenegro, and the AD the responsibility for deciding “if they want to change the country”.

It is up to the National Council, as stipulated in the regulations, to vote and approve the agenda at the beginning of this Sunday’s meeting, a body whose powers are to approve “possible coalitions or electoral support for external candidacies”.

The inclusion of this point for government scenarios gains relevance at a time when the composition of a new AD Government and the inclusion or not of IL names in this list are being discussed.

On Wednesday, after leaving the first of two audiences he had with the President of the Republic, the prime minister-designate, Luís Montenegro, said he expected to form a Government based on the majority “constituted by the deputies of the PSD and CDS-PP “.

However, Montenegro declined to respond directly to questions from the media about the possibility of IL also joining the executive or about the possible presentation of an Amending Budget.

According to the provisional results of the legislative elections, IL achieved 4.94%, with 319,685 votes, electing eight deputies.

Compared to the last legislative elections, despite remaining the fourth political force and with the same parliamentary representation, the liberals obtained around 46 thousand more votes.
