Video: black man is killed during police approach after having his body pressed: ‘I can’t breathe’ | World and Science

The Canton Police Department, in the state of Ohio, United States, released body camera footage showing the approach that resulted in the death of 53-year-old Frank Tyson on April 18 of this year.

According to NBC News, police officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch responded to a call of a car accident involving a falling light pole. Upon arriving at the scene, officers find an abandoned vehicle and are directed by witnesses to a veterans bar, where the suspect of causing the disturbance was hiding.

Inside the establishment, the duo begins to argue with Tyson and sets out to immobilize him. In the images it is possible to see the man trying to escape while repeating several times that “they will kill him”. After being restrained, he is thrown to the ground by the police, his body is pressed, he repeats several times that he cannot breathe and suddenly becomes silent.

In the following scenes, it is possible to see that both Schoenegge and Burch do not take the complaints seriously and one of them even makes fun by stating that he “had never been involved in a bar fight before”. With Tyson handcuffed, the police checked the man’s condition and noticed that there was no longer a pulse.

According to an interview with the victim’s niece on the News 5 Cleveland television channel, Tyson is a former prisoner and was released on April 6 from a 24-year sentence. They planned to see each other after the long period of seclusion, but they didn’t have time due to the incident.

According to Sky News, both Schoenegge and Burch have been placed on paid leave from police service. The press, the mayor of Canton, William Sherer II, regretted what happened and stated that the investigations will be carried out by the local Criminal Investigation Department.

The police department released a statement on Friday (26) stating that the officers had to enter into a physical fight with the victim and provided first aid until an emergency team arrived. Tyson was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:18 p.m. and the cause is still under investigation.
