Ohe parents of Maisie Schmidt, from Ohio, in the United States, were in shock when they had to say goodbye to their 4-year-old daughter after taking her to the hospital with simple complaints of a cough and blocked nose.
The girl, who suffered cold-like symptoms, had in fact been infected with human metapneumovirus (hMPV), a member of the same respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) family.
Both are the most common causes of respiratory tract infections in children.
After her first visit to the hospital, and being told by doctors that it was nothing more than a cold, Maisie’s condition quickly worsened. During a new trip to the hospital, the girl was placed in an induced coma and connected to a life support machine.
Two days after being admitted, it was discovered that she had suffered a stroke. Maisie then underwent surgery on the right side of her brain, removing part of the organ. However, nothing more could be done for the girl.
Then, on March 26, the parents had to make the agonizing decision to turn off the machine that was keeping their child alive.
