Ponte da Barca promises to “captivate the community” with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April

Ponte da Barca is preparing for a series of events designed to honor the legacy of April 25, 1974, thus celebrating 50 years of the Carnation Revolution.

Starting in January with an Exhibition of Posters and Artifacts from the country’s first free elections, as well as a musical tribute to the Songs of April, the calendar of events “promises to captivate the community”.

Still in the month of March, the Municipal Library becomes the stage for the exhibition “25 de Abril Toward the Cinquentenário”, organized by CIM Alto Minho, in partnership with RIBAM – Intermunicipal Network of Public Libraries of Alto Minho, and support from the municipality of Ponte da Barca, highlighting the key moments that led to the revolution, and dedicating Poetry Day with the event “Say and Read April”, in collaboration with the School Group.

As April approaches, activities intensify. A traveling exhibition will tour the municipality, inviting residents to reflect on “Where Were We 50 Years Ago?”. A concert presenting the music video “Carolina Adormecida”, by Gaiteiros de Bravães, is also part of the celebrations, while cinema and theater, in collaboration with the Agrupamento de Escolas, will provide cultural immersion, with film screenings and live performances that revisit the events and environment of the time.

On April 25th, the usual Solemn Session of the Municipal Assembly will take place, with moments of April Poems and Intervention Songs, remembering the importance of cultural resistance in the fight for freedom. On the same day, one of the highlights of the celebrations will take place with the Musical of the 50th Anniversary of the 25th of April, a production that will feature the participation of the Viv´arte Orchestra, guest soloists and the local Music Academy.

The culmination of the celebrations will take place in November, with a Conference entitled “50 Years Later, Fulfill April!”, followed by a musical show, in what will be the closing session.
