Coimbra will once again host, from the 28th to the 30th of March, the Street Music Festival – Baixa o Som, an urban music event, whose objective is to discover the architecture, monuments, commercial spaces and gastronomy of this historic area of city.
Baixa o Som will once again take a musical route through the historic area, featuring five street music bands and three philharmonic bands. The event, organized by the Chamber of Coimbra and the Agency for the Promotion of Baixa de Coimbra (APBC), was presented on Tuesday by the vice-president of the Chamber, Francisco Veiga, the vice-president of APBC, Orlanda Duarte, and the representative of the artistic direction of Baixa o Som, Adriano Franco, on the Coola Boola rooftop.
“Musical walk of discovery” is the motto of the Street Music Festival, which aims to challenge the public to visit various emblematic spaces of the city, such as the Comércio and 8 de Maio squares, Quebra-Costas, the streets of Sofia, Visconde da Luz and Ferreira Borges, Terreiro da Erva, Largo da Portagem, Sé Velha, among many others, always to the sound of live music.
There are five street music bands that make up the event’s lineup: Supertronik Bootleg, Funk You Brass Band, Desmói BB, Folhas de Pessego and Dixie Gringos Jazz Band. This edition seeks to expand its scope of action, giving way to philharmonic bands, with the presence of the municipality’s three associations: the Filarmónica União Taveirense, the Associação Filarmónica Adriano Soares and the Filarmónica da Associação Social e Recreativa de Ceira.
There will also be space for the exclusive presentation (in concert) of an ensemble of 20 young musicians from the region, who, on March 28th, will offer the public the results of a practical workshop and improvement of this musical “language”. , bringing a pedagogical and training side to Baixa o Som.
The Street Music Festival – Baixo o Som is organized by the Coimbra City Council and the APBC, with the support of the Union of Parishes of Coimbra, the Hotel Oslo and the Tricanas Folklore Ranch of Coimbra.
The event, whose investment by the City Council is 23 thousand euros, comes as part of the focus on reference initiatives that can strengthen the city’s projection, positioning and notoriety. The aim of this project is also to reinforce the urban animation and promotion policy, with a consistent offer of initiatives that enrich the city’s calendar of events, and that can attract more visitors to the historic area of Coimbra, namely downtown , reviving it, on the one hand, but also stimulating local commerce
