On the morning of this Sunday, March 24th, the traditional Procession of Palms took place in Póvoa de Varzim, a procession that began Holy Week in Póvoa de Varzim. Hundreds of people participated in the ceremony, as extras and faithful. See Marisa Moita Silva’s video below.
In addition to the blessing of the palms held in Largo da Misericórdia next to Hospital da Póvoa, the parishes of Lapa and S. José Ribamar also promoted identical religious activity, with the blessing taking place next to Fortaleza da Póvoa and in Largo da República in in front of the Chapel of S. Tiago, at the entrance to Rua da Junqueira.
Holy Week continues in Póvoa de Varzim until Easter Sunday, March 31st. Holy Wednesday, March 27th at 9:30 pm, a concert by the group Coral Ensaio is scheduled, at Igreja Matriz, which will be directed by Tiago Carriço.
On March 28th, Maundy Thursday, at 5pm, the celebration of the Lord’s Supper will take place at the Main Church. Later in the evening there is a traditional visit to the churches of Póvoa de Varzim. On March 29th, Good Friday, the Passion of the Lord is celebrated, in the Main Church, at 3pm. For the evening, the Burial Sermon is set at 9:30 pm in the Main Church and then, at 10 pm, the Procession of the Burial of the Lord, better known as the Procession of the Dead Lord. On March 30th, Holy Saturday, at 9:30 pm, the Easter Vigil will take place, with Mass of the Resurrection, at the Main Church.
On Easter Day, March 31st, the Solemn Eucharist is celebrated, at 9:30 am, in the Main Church, followed by the Resurrection Procession, at 10:45 am. In the afternoon, at 2:30 pm, the Pascal Visit begins, with the march going to people’s homes. At the end, at 7pm from Praça do Almada to the Main Church, the Festive Parade takes place, with all the beats. Arriving at the Main Church, there will be a Eucharist at 7pm.
