The centuries-old Fonte de Santiago, in the parish of Sé, in Braga, was classified as a monument of municipal interest, according to a notice published today in Diário da República.

The notice is dated March 14th and is signed by the Mayor of Braga, Ricardo Rio.

The classification proposal was approved by the municipal executive on February 19, 2024.

According to the proposal, it is a Renaissance monument, “in good condition”, which was built in 1531, by order of Archbishop Dom Diogo de Sousa.

Initially, the fountain was located on Rua da Cónega, in a place where pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago passed by.

The fountain was moved, in 1995, to the end of a small square, south of Rua da Boavista, located in the historic center of Braga.

Still according to the same proposal, the fountain consists of “a back of simple shapes, displaying a frowning spout, spouting water from the mouth, topped by an inscription and the weapons of faith of its founder, Dom Diogo de Sousa”.

The fountain is part of a niche closed by a glass door, which protects the altarpiece and encloses the image of Santiago.

At the front, there is a rectangular tank.
