The Pedro Molina Quartet, distinguished with the “Best Esemble” Award, in the International Jazz Competition, within the scope of the Campus Jazz – Jazz Festival of the University of Aveiro, opens the 2024 program of this festival, on April 30th, World Jazz Day . In the same week, on May 3rd, the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras (OFB) and the Maria Mendes quartet perform, in a fusion between fado and contemporary jazz. Maria Mendes will lead a masterclass on the same day.

It is one of the highlights of the 2024 edition of Campus Jazz. The Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras (OFB) on stage with the Maria Mendes quartet. This quartet includes Mário Costa on drums, Jasper Somsen on double bass and Cédric Hanriot on piano. They will be on stage on May 3, at 9:30 pm, in the Renato Araújo auditorium (in the UA Rectory building), to present “Saudade, Color of Love”, a project nominated for the American Grammy and the Latin Grammy. In the live recording of this album, the artist was accompanied on stage by Metropole Orkest, in addition to the quartet that usually accompanies her.

On the same day, and in the same place, at 3pm, Maria Mendes will lead a masterclass, a learning and sharing opportunity for anyone in the singing field (not just jazz). The session is also open to other instrumentalists or listeners.

In addition to concerts and several masterclasses, Campus Jazz includes workshops, jam sessions, a presentation by music schools, open classes and the “Jazz Talks” conference, in addition to the Competition that has applications open for new ensembles until May 9th.

The multi-award-winning composer and pianist Dave Meder – who will perform with the UA Jazz Combo, on May 10th, at 9:30 pm, at Cineteatro Alba, in Albergaria-a-Velha -, the trio Arbenz May 24th, at 4pm, in the Renato Araújo auditorium – and pianist and composer Aaron Parks – will perform with his trio on May 29th, at 9:30pm, at the Casa da Cultura in Ílhavo – are other internationally known names that appear on the program, available at https://www.ua.pt/pt/campusjazz/programa-2024.

Drummer Mark Guiliana, considered by The New York Times as “a drummer with a cult of admiration”, will be a special guest. The interaction with the UA Jazz Orchestra, on stage, on May 16, at 9:30 pm, in the Renato Araújo auditorium, includes originals written by him with arrangements by UA students.

The program includes masterclasses, workshops or tiny lab talks with these internationally renowned names.
