Currently in second place in the Championship, Sheffield United is in an excellent position (from a sporting point of view) to return to the elite of English football, as it has 6 points ahead of third-placed Middlesbrough, but the dream could be on the way to become a nightmare. All because, due to serious financial problems, the club is on the verge of being placed under judicial administration, which would automatically represent a deduction of 12 points in the table – and a drop from 2nd to 7th place! – if it is completed by Thursday.

To prevent this from happening, according to the ‘Daily Mail’, Sheffield’s management will have applied extreme cost control measures, ranging from cutting the heating of the training center’s pitch and moving all training sessions to an indoor area. , to the request for lawn caretakers to stop using fertilizer on the training pitches. A decrease in the use of scouts and analysts was also ordered, but also a cut in the recruitment of external workers to help with the club’s tasks. And, of course, failing to pay current debts, which is leading to an accumulation of unpaid invoices that only further complicate the club’s situation.

In all, according to the same publication, Sheffield United owes around 20 million euros in transfers, and this amount may even be much higher, as there are other transfers that still do not enter this most recent accounting. Among the signings to be paid are those of Rhian Brewster (from Liverpool) and Anel Ahmedhodzic (from Malmo), players who cost 26 and 4.5 million euros, respectively.

The most incredible thing of all is that, despite this critical situation, which also led to delays in salary payments, Sheffield is having a season of great level, with that isolated second place in the Championship table and still the presence in the quarters FA Cup finals, a test in which Tottenham beat Tottenham in the previous round. However, unless the financial situation miraculously improves and wages are paid, the dream could indeed turn into a nightmare…
