Google announced that starting next Monday (01), policies involving mass email sending will change. Companies that want to send email campaigns will need to meet new authentication requirements presented by the platform.

Changes for sending mass emails

The software and services multinational revealed that it seeks to reduce the number of emails that arrive in the “Spam” category to reduce the number of unnecessary emails, with the aim of improving the security of users who often receive scams and suspicious advertisements from different companies in the Spam folder.

The company also specified that it considers sending mass emails of 5,000 messages or more to personal Google accounts within a 24-hour period and that all emails must have been sent from a main domain.

New authentication formats

The platform’s product manager, Neil Kumaran, outlined that all bulk senders will be required to authenticate their emails using well-established best practices, as currently, many bulk senders do not properly secure and configure their systems, which allows that attackers can easily hide in your midst.

Among the changes that will be implemented are domain-based message authentication, reporting and compliance, email identified by domain keys, and the sender policy framework. Kumaran emphasizes that ultimately these measures seek to close loopholes exploited by cybercriminals, offering an additional layer of security for all email users.

According to Google, bulk senders that do not meet sending requirements will receive temporary errors, accompanied by error codes, in a small percentage of non-compliant email traffic. These errors are designed to assist senders in identifying email traffic that does not comply with the new guidelines.
