In an official PlayStation Podcast interview to celebrate his retirement and bringing interesting facts about his time at the company, Jim Ryan revealed that the PlayStation 2 sold 160 million units.

When asked about the biggest events of each decade, he said that in the 2000s, it was the number of PlayStation 2 consoles sold. Lastly, it reveals the video game’s total sales.

Despite already being considered the best-selling console of all time, previous PlayStation 2 numbers sold were around 155 million. Since then, Sony has stopped counting sales of its second-generation video game, with Jim Ryan’s number likely to be the last officially released.

Earlier this year, Nintendo had revealed that the Nintendo Switch had sold 138.36 million units. As a result, it was believed that it would need to sell more than 20 million units to surpass the final sales number of the PlayStation 2.

As of today (01), Jim Ryan officially retires from Sony after almost 30 years at PlayStation. In the official statement regarding his decision, he cites the difficulty of balancing work in North America while living in Europe.

He believes that the PlayStation 5 has a promising trajectory and could surpass the PlayStation 2 one day. In December last year, Sony revealed that its latest console had surpassed 50 million units.
