Mbegan his visit in the city of Shenzhen, in the southeast of the Chinese mainland, where he met with the head of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Song Tao.

Song conveyed to Ma the “warm greetings” of Chinese President Xi Jinping, with whom the former leader of Taiwan is expected to meet during his visit to the People’s Republic of China, his second since ending his term in 2016.

Quoted by the official Chinese news agency and external interference”.

Ma agreed with Song on the need to refuse Taiwan’s independence, thanked Xi for his greetings and stressed the “intrinsic bond” between people on both sides, based on “blood and affinity.”

He pointed out the need to “strengthen exchanges and cooperation in all fields”, especially “among young people”, on the political basis of defending the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan independence”.

The expression “1992 Consensus” reflects a supposed tacit agreement between Taipei and Beijing to recognize that “there is only one China in the world”, although each party has interpreted it in its own way.

Responsible for bringing China and Taiwan closer together since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, the former leader of the Kuomintang party (KMT, currently in opposition) traveled to the People’s Republic of China in the company of a group of students with whom he will visit the provinces of Guangdong (southeast) and Shaanxi (center) and the capital, Beijing, to participate in cultural, educational and historical activities.

The Ma Ying-jeou Foundation said the former president and students will spend three days in Guangzhou to visit the university and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial, the headquarters of the former Whampoa Military Academy and companies such as Tencent and BYD, before to head to Shaanxi on Wednesday.

Although the meeting with Xi has not yet been confirmed, several Taiwanese media outlets consider it certain for April 8, which would mark the first meeting between Ma and Xi after the Singapore summit in 2015.

Official dialogue between Taipei and Beijing has been suspended, however, for eight years, and military tensions in the Taiwan Strait have increased, with the Chinese authorities hardening their speech in favor of “national reunification”.

Taiwan has been governed autonomously under the official name of the Republic of China since 1949 and Beijing continues to consider it a rebellious province and does not exclude the use of force.
