The National Maritime Authority rescued, on Thursday, April 25th, a dog that fell from a cliff in Peniche, Leiria, and was isolated in one of the caves.

In a post on Facebook, the Maritime Police say they received an alert from a witness who was at the scene at around 3:45 pm. The animal was close to Carreiro de Joanes beach.

Two members of the local command of the Peniche Maritime Police, two lifeguard crew and the municipality’s volunteer firefighters were called in for the rescue.



“Upon arrival at the location, members of the Maritime Police verified that the cave where the dog was located was difficult to access, and crew members from the Peniche Lifeguard Station were immediately called to the location”, reads the caption of the publication. . Despite the fall, authorities said, the animal was not injured.

After entering the cave and rescuing the dog, they took it to a “suitable area for it to be lifted by firefighters”, they added.

The Maritime Police also revealed that the animal had been missing for three days and was, in the meantime, handed over to its owners.
