O The Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation into Group 1143, which has organized demonstrations against immigration, due to xenophobic publications shared on social media, involving suspicions of hate crimes. The information was provided by Expresso and confirmed to the News by the Minute by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

“The establishment of an investigation is confirmed, which is directed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the DIAP of Lisbon”, states a response sent to News by the Minute by the PGR press office.

According to the weekly Expresso, at issue are publications from the group, led by far-right activist Mário Machado, which have a xenophobic nature and which target, above all, Muslim and Jewish immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community and members of the Portuguese Communist Party.

It is recalled that Group 1143 was responsible for organizing an anti-Islam march, in February, in Largo de Camões, in Lisbon. Initially, the group wanted to hold that demonstration in Mouraria and Martim Moniz, but it was banned by the Lisbon City Council, after an opinion from the Public Security Police (PSP) warned of the disturbance of public tranquility. The decision was confirmed by the Administrative Court of the Lisbon Circle, which led to a change in the location of the march.

Today, it was known that Grupo1143 called for a new demonstration, with the name “Less Immigration, More Housing”, for Praça D. João I, in Porto, on Saturday.

To Lusa, a PSP source, who authorized the demonstration, said that two protests would take place – one against immigration and the other anti-fascist – around 350 meters apart in downtown Porto.

The Porto Chamber also stated that a police assessment was requested from the Porto PSP Metropolitan Command, as happens in all demonstrations. The police opinion is not contrary to the carrying out of the indicated demonstrations”, he added, highlighting that the right to demonstrate “does not require authorization” from the president of the municipality and that the security assessment is “the exclusive responsibility of the PSP”.

On the social network main reason for the brutal increase in housing prices”.

In another publication on the same social network, the far-right group states that “the April Fascists want to prohibit patriots from demonstrating in Porto”.

In turn, the Housing Today association also called for a demonstration “Against Fascism, More and Better Housing” for Saturday.

In an attempt to prevent the demonstration called by the 1143 group from taking place, several organizations involved in the “demonstration against fascism” launched an open letter addressed to the President of the Republic, president of the Chamber of Porto, commander of the PSP of Porto and other people responsible for the area of justice.

Consulted by Lusa, the letter, similar to the one published in January following the demonstration “against the Islamization of Europe” in Martim Moniz, in Lisbon, calls for stopping “the exit from this demonstration which (…) constitutes incitement to hatred and violence and not the mere exercise of freedom of expression”.
