Changesite-(Y): The mineral discovered by China… on the Moon

A mineral is a solid, crystalline natural body formed as a result of the interaction of physical-chemical processes in geological environments. Each mineral is classified and named not only on the basis of its chemical composition, but also on the crystal structure of the materials that compose it.

China recently discovered a new mineral called Changesite-(Y) on the Moon.

Changesite-(Y): the sixth mineral found by humanity on the natural satellite

China today announced the discovery on the moon of Changesite-(Y), the sixth mineral found by humanity on Earth's natural satellite. The vice president of the Atomic Energy Authority of China, Dong Baotong, released at a press conference the name of the mineral, found in lunar basalt particles, according to the official Global Times newspaper.

Scientists highlighted that the material collected by China's lunar mission and the research carried out are of great importance to understand the origin and evolution of the Moon, as well as the possibilities of using its resources effectively.

Last June, it was announced the discovery of high-pressure minerals in samples collected on the surface of the Moon by that same probe, such as fragments of seifertite and stishovite, minerals formed from silicon dioxide subjected to high temperatures and pressures.

The Chang'e program (named after a goddess who, according to Chinese legend, lives on the Moon) began with the launch of a first probe in 2007.
