A 12-year-old child, who was in the 6th grade, died and two others suffered serious injuries after a shooting attack at a school in the Finnish city of Vantaa, north of the capital Helsinki, local police confirmed at a press conference.

Finnish police responded to an alert just after 9am local time, 7am in mainland Portugal. The first reports about the incident indicated that three minors had been injured and the shooter, also a minor, had been detained. So far, the young man’s motivations are still unknown.

The local population was asked to stay away from the site.

Local press reports indicate that some children managed to hide during the attack and told their parents what was happening on their cell phones..

The Viertola school has students aged between seven and 16, who, like other Finnish schools, had returned to classes after a few days of Easter holidays.

According to other information provided by Finnish media, cited by the BBC, the educational institution has 800 students and 90 assistants and teachers, operating in two locations (the attack took place in campus from Jokiranta).

Vantaa’s deputy director of education and training, Katri Kalske, reported that a crisis office has already been convened and explained that any update on the incident is the responsibility of the police, according to the Finnish channel Yle.
