Spaniard Iker Muniain will leave Athletic Bilbao after 15 seasons in the first team, plus four in training, the LaLiga club announced this Wednesday.

The 32-year-old winger leaves the Basque club “by his own decision” at the end of the season, with Athletic welcoming that Muniain can leave “through the big door”, after winning the Copa del Rey a few weeks ago.

Muniain arrived at the Basques at the age of 12, debuted in the main team at the age of 16, in 2009/10, and played 557 times for the club, becoming the second player with the most appearances for Athletic Bilbao, behind José Ángel Iribar. (614).

According to Ahtletic, these numbers “reflect the importance” that Muniain had at the club, for which he made his debut on July 30, 2009, against Young Boys, in the Europa League, scoring the first of 75 goals for the club in the second leg of that tie. , a goal that made him the second youngest player to score for the Basques, only surpassed by Txomin Acedo, in 1914.

Muniain, who was capped twice by Spain, won the 2014/15 and 2019/20 Super Cups and the Copa del Rey this season, breaking a 40-year ‘drought’ in this competition.
